GAS DETECTION REACHES THE NEXT LEVEL WITH CU LI-ION TAMER, A NEW SOLUTION FOR EARLY WARNING OF LITHIUM ION BATTERY FAILURE

Honeywell takes gas detection to the next level with Li-Ion Tamer, the new battery rack monitoring system that enhances the safety of buildings where Li-Ion battery installations are in place.
The need to store energy will increase tremendously in years to come, due to renewable energy sources like Wind & Solar Power as well as supporting our digital world with data centers. In order to bridge low power production times or to secure a smooth operation, Lithium Ion are the battery of choice in todays’ modern world. But Li-Ion batteries can be a safety hazard since they contain a flammable electrolyte, and if damaged or incorrectly charged can lead to explosions and fires. Once such a thermal runaway has started, almost nothing can stop the reaction.
Honeywell proudly introduces the Li-Ion Tamer Rack Monitor gas detection solution that enhances the safety of buildings where Li-Ion battery installations are in place. The Li-Ion Tamer Rack Monitoring system can provide an alert to “off-gas” events that occur early in the failure mode of Li-Ion batteries, well in advance of smoke detection and traditional LFL gas detection. Early warning of off-gas events enables proper mitigation steps to be taken to avoid progression to a catastrophic thermal runaway failure. The Li-Ion Tamer Rack Monitoring system is designed to be plug-and-play, easy to install and consists of just two primary components, (i) off-gas sensors and (ii) controllers.
Off-gas sensors comprise on-board detection algorithms making them acutely sensitive to lithium-ion battery off-gassing compounds, do not require calibration, are compatible with all forms of lithium-ion battery form factors and chemistries and have a lifetime comparable to a typical lithium-ion battery system. These are connected to a controller that contains proprietary logic to diagnose when and where battery off-gas events have occurred. It has digital and Modbus serial outputs that can be used to electrically isolate the battery system and activate the ventilation system.
The Li-Ion Tamer system, having an established technology certified by international organizations, offers multiple benefits such as increased flexibility in design due to the possibilities of placing the sensors, elimination of the need for access to the protected space by remote sampling and last but not least, minimum costs for installation, commissioning and maintenance.
